Shame about the password reset. Seems that the conversion to the new version of bbPress has caused some passwords to be lots. Ignoring the price change for a moment, think about how the renewal process has worked:
You paid for a year’s membership from Nov 2011, to Nov 2012. You’ve selected the option to renew. Probably trying to be “helpful”, it looks like the renewal process has been designed so that instead of auto-renewing in November (and you then wasting a couple of months’ worth of membership), it waits until you actually use the scheme again & then starts the new 12 month membership from there. If you’d taken out a bike on the 1st Jan you’d have been charged £45. I think the weekly membership works this way too.
I think it’s just a case of unfortunate timing. You could contact them and argue the toss, but I wouldn’t hold out too much hope of getting a reduction.Don't forget to add your own signature! 1) Click your name in the top left (under Home once logged in) 2) Click Edit link on the left menu 3) Fill in "Your Forum Signature" 4) Click Update Profile
I personally think bus lanes should be used by buses only. Oh, and cyclists too. And emergency vehicles too i guess, but not cabs (black or mini).Don't forget to add your own signature! 1) Click your name in the top left (under Home once logged in) 2) Click Edit link on the left menu 3) Fill in "Your Forum Signature" 4) Click Update Profile
Well I took the plunge and last night bought myself a bicycle for the first time in over 20 years. I am now the very proud owner of a Halfords Real Classic Gents Bicycle!
At this point I am in 100% agreement with this review on the Halfords site:
“I could ride this bike all day – it just glides along and is so comfortable. The 3 speed hub gears have a good range – and in 3rd it keeps up effortlessly with a mountain bike in 21st so the ratio seems similar. In 1st it will go up any hill without too much effort. The ‘tick tick tick’ of the gear hub in 2nd and 3rd (it does not tick in 1st as Sturmey Archers don’t) is musical and you can tell which gear you are in and how fast you are going by ear. Sturmey Archer (taken over as SA/Sunrace in 2000) have been going for years and among thousands of bikes worldwide – even the Chopper bikes of the 70s proudly carried their reliable hubs which are latterly completely sealed and maintenance free! I’ve been a long distance cyclist in the past and would think nothing of setting off on a 300 mile road trip on this bike – it is so comfortable. Another reviewer mentioned that your top hat would not become dislodged on this bike – and I agree! Every bike should come with a copy of H.G. Wells’ book The Wheels of Chance – its a good synergy of modern cycliing and great tradition! A super machine for the money that glides for me anyway!”
So I guess I’m now part of the 1 in 5 Boris Bikers who have gone on to buy cycling equipment.
I plan to retain my annual membership for now. I feel so attached to our lovely blue Boris Bikes. If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t cycling around London with a big smile across my face.
I used to say/murmur/shout RED! whenever I was stopped at a red light and someone cycled through it. Don’t bother so much now, just seems a waste of my energy.
Another problem with RLJ’s is when they get squashed they cause traffic chaos, tie up the valuable resources of the emergency services, and put a burden on the NHS! Not only that they don’t realise the effect on their children, friends and parents having to take time off to attend their funerals. Pretty selfish really.
When the Boris Bikes were first introduced, I did find buses would frequently overtake me just before bus stops. It was very frustrating and dangerous. However this seemed to stop all of a sudden after a few weeks. I heard somewhere that all drivers were made to watch a cycle safety video and that they were instructed to slow down behind cyclists when approaching a stop instead of overtaking them.
Having said that, a few weeks ago, for the first time in probably a year I had and aggressive bus driver overtake when approaching a stop. It was on Princess St in the City (very narrow street next to the Bank of England). He hadn’t even completed overtaking me when he pulled into the bus stop forcing me off the road onto the footpath! I almost fell off and was rather shaken. Seeing as the bus was now stopped and the front door open and rode up along the footpath to speak to the driver. Before I got to say anything he started yelling and screaming at me before closing the door in my face and driving off! Had he simply said sorry then I probably would have left it at that, but given the rude attitude on top of trying to run me over, I took out my iPhone and took a photo of his license plate.
I reported the incident via the TfL website and a few weeks later received a written apology from the bus company. They said they had reviewed CCTV and had spoken to the driver but could not disclose the outcome due to privacy. They did however offer an apology. So that was nice.
Considering all the boris bike journeys I have made over the last a year and half, to only to have one close call is pretty good going I reckon.
Looks like tonight is no good for me either. My little guy had his 2nd vaccination this morning and is playing up so best help out at home.
Thanks for trying Martin. I think spring next year would be the way to go, when the weather is more bicycle friendly.
I hope to make it along too, although being a first time dad to a 2 month old baby it’s a little hard to commit right now. Hopefully I can confirm closer to the date.
Talking of the Shoreditch High St docking station (I know this topic is actually about the Bethnal Green Road one), I just spotted this photo on twitter:

I have posted 2 questions already.
A few months ago I rode a Boris Bike from Shoreditch to St. Thomas’ Hospital at Waterloo in a torrential downpour. My wife had gone into to Labour with our first child and I had to get to the hospital quick! The boris bikes seems the best option. I don’t think I have ever ridden so fast! I as sopping wet by the time I got there only to find it was a false alarm. Anyway, my son was born a few weeks later and both he and mother are happy and healthy.
TfL Press office just rang me asking to post this info to the forums but it look like @chineseJohn has beat me to it.
Good idea running a live online chat, although I do rather like to have a beer in person with them.
Here’s a link to the chat room https://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/corporate/media/questiontime/default.aspx
You can post questions in advance using this link or go to the link on 18-Oct from 7pm for the live chat.
I had reason to phone the call centre yesterday (my credit card had changed and my annual renewal had failed). I asked the operator if he knew of any changes to the system about 3 weeks ago. The operator replied “you mean the instant green lights?”. All he could tell me was that there “might” have been an update to the system. Strange they are so secretive, all the same I’m just glad they have finally sorted it out.
BTW, I finished my conversation with the call centre operator asking if he had heard of the Boris Bikes forums. His response was “Yes, it is notorious”!
I’ve had green lights in under about 10 seconds for about a week now. I must have used a dozen different docking stations in that time too, so it doesn’t just seem like luck to me.
My guess is they have finally fixed (although never admitted broken) the caching of members details at each terminal. Either that or a huge number of annual members haven’t bothered renewing.
It would be interesting to get some inside info on what’s going on.
