When I use my key no lights come on at all. If I try testing it on a station with a red light then even that goes out! This all started a few days ago and I haven’t been able to hire a bike since. They are sending me a new key but I wonder what made it fail in the first place, the key isn’t physically damaged and has not been near magnets etc. Is there anything else that can break it – too close to mobile phone etc?

The plastic on mine failed. It just broke open. The chips inside are pretty robust but do fail from time to time (same technology as oyster cards, just in a different plastic housing).
