For reasons beyond me, I’ve been rather excited about this whole scheme – far more excited than the appearance of 3-speed heavy bikes should really elicit from a fully grown man who has never really been that keen on cycling. Maybe it’s simply the newness of it all. Maybe the nonchalance of cycling into a dock and walking away carefree as others fiddle with combination locks. Or perhaps the feeling of being in a secret ‘club’ as you exchange knowing looks when passing fellow Boris bikers.
And as well as serving the very practical purpose of getting me to and from work each day, the bikes have also started to make me think about leisure/sport/fun applications. As a regular jogger, I’ve been gradually integrating the bikes into my morning runs. It’s a great way of extending my trips beyond my regular routes, and providing a bit of variety in addition to just running.
So I started to think about having some fun with these bikes:
- How many docking stations could you visit in one day?
- How fast could you cycle a Boris?
- How far could you take a Boris outside of London and back in 30mins / 1 hour / 1 day?
- Could a Boris Bike duathlon (running/cycling between docking stations) be organised?
With a free day yesterday, I embarked on my first ‘Boris Bike Challenge’. The rules I set myself were very simple:
- Visit one docking station in each ‘village’ (as defined by the docking station names)
- Incur no usage fees
The result was a rather bizarre mix of running, cycling and orienteering. I had sketched out a rough route, but outside of the areas I know well (central/West/South West), there was a lot of planning ‘on the fly’ (and a lot of getting lost…). One thing is for sure though, I wouldn’t have survived with just a paper map – my android app was absolutely essential. Also essential was my £4.99 Casio digital watch which made sure I was adhering to the ‘five minute rule’ between stations.
All in all, it was a brilliant way to see the city, and far more interesting than my usual jog. The results in brief:
- Number of docking stations visited: 61 (Shad Thames was not working, and I couldn’t get a bike out of either of the ones in Monument.)
- Total time: 7.5 hours (a lot of messing about, especially in the City. Some good planning would cut this right down)
- Approx distance: 32 miles
- Cycle Super Highways used: 1 (CS7)
- Explanations given to strangers about the fee structure: 3
- Number of insults received: 1 (From a passing van. I think he was just jealous)
I would love to know if anyone else has had similar thoughts or done anything like this? Any other ideas for similar applications for the bikes?

August 15, 2010 at 2:35 pm #76653Congratulations, a true feat. You’ve obviously created a new sporting challenge
August 15, 2010 at 5:34 pm #76654Challenges: (how fast) longest trip between two docking station in under 30 minutes (+ how close to 29min:59sec dare you go?)
August 15, 2010 at 5:48 pm #76655Sounds like fun. You should try to organise different type of events – to get from A to B as quickly as possible with fewest docking; endurance event; or even a cycle touring event including cake stop!
August 15, 2010 at 6:00 pm #76656Amazing – and I thought that my Boris Bike exercise challenge was fun – your version is outstanding!
August 15, 2010 at 6:06 pm #76657I’ve got a dodgy achilles tendon at the moment so running is out of the question for a while (I like to do 10K on Mondays and 8K on Thursdays after work from Broadgate before yoga class ) – instead, it’s pop into the gym, get changed and pick up abike from Sun Street or Christopher Street and go exploring for 20 minutes or so before looking for a docking station to drop off and spend 5 mins or so looking for the next station for the next leg.
I did suggest to the gym they get a bunch of keys and have Boris Biking instead of Spin Classes but no doubt someone would have a sense of humour failure.
August 16, 2010 at 8:24 am #76658That’s ridiculous and yet brilliant! Well done.
August 16, 2010 at 12:55 pm #76659That is quite amazing Borisbiker, I’m really impressed!
August 16, 2010 at 2:28 pm #76660This has been picked up by the lovely people at Londonist but given it goes a bit wider have set up a separate thread here
August 16, 2010 at 8:46 pm #76661Thanks for all the very kind comments. Though I predict that there will be some truly impressive feats achieved by people with a far greater level of fitness, and who can avoid getting seriously lost around Moorgate and stopping for a flapjack and Ribena.
This definitely takes it to the next level – very impressive indeed:

@christianh – thanks for sharing that link. I also love the idea of hunting down Boris and providing a cycling escort! Brilliant! A Boris bike convoy also appeals. How about organising a ‘flash-mob’ style cycle through of central London on Boris bikes? I imagine there would be a frenetic rush around the 29 minute mark though
August 16, 2010 at 9:10 pm #76662Great work Borisbiker!! Am delighted to see Borisbikes have picked up on our charity effort to cycle through and dock at every single one of the docking stations in London… Your little reconnaissance mission is starting to make me think it will be doable:-) 24 hours of cycling a 23kg bike is going to be harder than it sounds… if anyone does want to support our great charity, please feel free to do so – http://www.justgiving.com/bikelondon
keep up the great discussions on these forums!! if only i’d found them earlier:-)
August 16, 2010 at 9:40 pm #76663Great idea! When the scheme was started my first idea was doing a Friday Night Ride to the Coast (http://fnrttc.blogspot.com/) on a Boris Bike. Given the pricing this would be quite an expensive venture, however…
August 17, 2010 at 1:42 pm #76664Go for it! With the state of Boris’s roads, you really do need a balloon-tyred beast to soak up the bumps. I did my first ride on Sunday – 31 min from Hoxton to Vauxhall – the bike was stable and smooth, albeit at a stately speed.
August 17, 2010 at 2:47 pm #76665Brilliant work borisbiker! I must confess on my train journey home I started thinking about all the alternative things that can be done with them….my first (and possibly rather questionable) idea was to mirror the “Circle Line Pub Crawl” game and do a “Boris Bike” version……the only responsible precaution I thought of was to maybe do it away from the centre (if that makes it any safer at all!?)
The other idea was a form of marathon, where there were 26 docking points to reach, and at each dock you had to change bikes, whilst not incurring any fees, etc etc.
Alternatively I wanted to head down to the Southbank and get a BMX’er to throw some shapes on a local skate ramp…seems The Telegraph got there ahead of me!
August 17, 2010 at 6:02 pm #76666Not as ambitious, but I rode from the most western docking point (Kensington Olympia) to the most eastern point (Whitechapel). Not a bad ride really, and made it in about 55 minutes.
