I have used these occasionally. As a PR stunt they may have some value, but:

1)In almost no places do they represent new cycle lanes -more generally they are in place of old lanes, or in bus lanes

2)They have no legal force what-so-ever – hence cars parking in them. Some of them are protected by a dashed-white line (advising people not to enter), but I have seen none that are protected by a solid white line (do not enter)

3)The surface is quite smooth, and with slick tyres can be quite slippy. I saw one flyer where TfL tried to sell the fact that, near junctions, they had used a roughened surface to aid stopping – which rather indicates they know this is a problem. Most cycle lanes use this roughened surface for their entire length…

Basically, good PR, but in my experience about as much use as a chocolate fireguard :-p
