Personally I don’t wear a helmet on either my home bike or when BoBi-ing. As far as I see I’m pootling around the streets of London, not entering the Tour de France. I’ve come closer to near disaster when crossing the road as a pedestrian (with right of way on my side) than on a bike – so do I need to wear acres of lycra, high visibility neon and a crash helmet in those circumstances?

The only times a helmet is a necessity in my point of view is if you’re running red lights, riding like an idiot, running up the nearside of a bus or lorry etc etc all of which I would never dream of doing. Helmets and other cycling safety gear seem to breed complacency and stupidity in a sizeable minority of cyclists in my view…
