I had a chance to try out the Toronto scheme. I was very impressed.
Bikes are near identical to London (though oddly the rear reflectors which seem to be falling off are not present on this model). Docks are also near identical, except they beep at you. The audible response upon docking and pressing buttons was very helpful actually. Rather than plumbed into the pavement, the docks are all mounted on big metal plates so they can be stowed away during the cold Canadian winter. The docking screen computer system was much simpler than ours – a much smaller touch screen, with fewer options. However, the system was *much* more responsive. No probs at all with casual hire (even with foreign credit card) and instantaneous response both of the terminal and the bike dock (i.e yellow light lasted only 5 secs). None of the issues that plague us in London. That said, usage seemed poor – very few users out on the streets. I hope it catches on.
It reassures me that one day the London computer system will be fixed (hope they hurry up!).
